To the Membership of the Texas Association of Otolaryngology:

The Board of the TAO would like to keep you apprised of updates regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic that we are all dealing with in our practices, academic centers and affiliated hospitals. The recommendations are changing daily. Therefore, we are sending out the recently released guidelines regarding Endoscopic Sinus Surgery developed by the Stanford Otolaryngology Department after conversations with colleagues in China and Italy.

They recommend:
Canceling elective cases, preceding with urgent cases after COVID 19 testing 48 hours prior to surgery, and if positive then proceed wearing PAPR (Powered, Air Purifying Respirators). For emergent cases PAPR is recommended for all OR Staff until further data is forthcoming.

The Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery has also released similar recommendations which can be found at the following link:

We have also enclosed a statement from the British Laryngology Society.

As recommendations change, we will endeavor to keep you abreast of them. Although Otolaryngology is not on the front lines necessarily, we are at high risk of exposure based on our work in the Head and Neck. Please do your best to stay safe in clinic and the OR while still providing the level of excellence in care our specialty is known for.
